Socket Removal in Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty

The success of revision total hip arthroplasty depends on the quality of host bone remaining after implant removal. Severe damage to the host acetabulum may occur during removal of a well-fixed acetabular socket, making socket removal one of the most challenging aspects of revision total hip arthroplasty.

Current acetabular socket removal techniques are manual, require an extended period of time, and result in bone defects. The EZX Acetabular Cup Removal System (iMEDiCOM) is available for cemented and noncemented socket removal and includes an electric mode. The EZX Acetabular Cup Removal System allows for safe and quick acetabular socket removal without damaging host bone.

This video shows acetabular socket removal with the use of the EZX Acetabular Cup Removal System. We performed acetabular socket removal using the EZX Acetabular Cup Removal System in six patients. Mean socket removal time was 2 minutes and 12 seconds. No massive host bone damage or fractures occurred.

If used in appropriately indicated patients, the EZX Acetabular Cup Removal System may minimize host bone damage and shorten surgical time in revision total hip arthroplasty.
