Suzuki Frame for Proximal Interphalangeal Joint Fracture-Dislocation

Dorsal fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint are one of the most common hand problems. In patients with a dorsal fracture-dislocation in whom nonsurgical treatment fails, surgery often is necessary. Various treatment options are available to manage stability and mobility of the joint. The Suzuki frame is an optimal surgical treatment option for the management of a proximal interphalangeal joint fracture-dislocation because it allows for early joint mobilization, affords stability, and allows for distraction at the fracture site. This video outlines the steps for surgical placement of a Suzuki frame on the fourth digit of a patient. In addition, the video presents data in the literature supporting the use of a Suzuki frame in patients with an intra-articular middle phalanx fracture and patients with a proximal interphalangeal joint subluxation/dislocation.
