Reduction of Wrong Site Surgery
Wrong site surgery (WSS) is described as surgery on the wrong site or wrong side, using the wrong implant, performing the wrong procedure, or operating on the wrong patient. Currently, the lack of mandatory reporting makes understanding the true incidence of WSS difficult, but currently it is estimated to be 1 event per 100,000 surgeries. This varies by surgical specialty and orthopaedic surgery is currently the surgical specialty with the second highest incidence of WSS.
