Ultrasonography-Guided Plantar Fascia Release With a Needle: A Novel and Closed Surgical Procedure

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. Current surgical procedures for the management of plantar fasciitis include open surgery, percutaneous release, endoscopic surgery, and ultrasonography-guided ultra-minimally invasive surgery. Ultrasonography-guided plantar fascia release can be performed as an outpatient procedure in an operating room without a tourniquet, using 1- to 2-mm incisions and local anesthetic agents. Ultrasonography-guided plantar fasciotomy using multiple perforations with a needle is a closed and novel technique that reduces the risk of complications and decreases hospital costs because the procedure can be performed in a specialist’s consultation room. Our preliminary results of the procedure are excellent, and the technique is reliable and safe.
