Ultrasonography-Guided Intra-Articular Injection of the Hip

Intra-articular injection of corticosteroid effectively alleviates pain and improves function in patients with hip joint pathology. In addition, these injections can be effective diagnostic tools, discriminating between confounding pathologies about the hip. Given the constrained nature of the hip joint and the proximity of the joint to various neurovascular structures, the use of gross anatomic landmarks for guidance of intra-articular injections is not advised. Ultrasonography is a low-cost, portable, and effective imaging modality that can be used for guidance during intra-articular injection. This video provides a detailed overview of the technique for ultrasonography-guided injection of the hip joint. The video discusses pearls for avoiding the medial neurovascular structures and highlights various landmarks visualized on ultrasonography that facilitate safe and effective intra-articular injection.
