Application of an Intrinsic Plus Splint
This video demonstrates the sequential process of application of an upper extremity splint in the intrinsic plus position. Materials, technique, and routine pathologic entities that can be managed via this splinting technique are described. Basic supplies include plaster (7- to 8-ply thick), webril for padding, bias as an overwrap, and Medipore tape. Standard scissors and warm water are essential to activate the plaster and allow for sculpting of the splint. Flexion of the metacarpophalangeal joints to approximately 90° places the intrinsic structures of the hand in a stretched position and prevents contracture from prolonged immobilization.
The video outlines fundamentals of webril wrapping and plaster function, including optimal wrapping techniques and quality splint application. Appropriate patient analgesic agents are vital for easy and efficient splint application.
