Total Wrist Arthroplasty - Indications, Technique, and Outcomes

Total wrist arthroplasty is performed less frequently than replacement of larger joints because of alternative treatment options, such as partial fusion and proximal row carpectomy, and because of concerns for failure associated with earlier generation implants. However, total wrist arthroplasty may decrease pain, restore function, and improve quality of life and is invaluable for patients with bilateral wrist involvement.

This video discusses the indications, contraindications, and surgical technique for total wrist arthroplasty. The procedure will be demonstrated in three clinical scenarios: total wrist arthroplasty for the management of osteoarthritis, total wrist arthroplasty for the management of a subluxated radiocarpal joint, and conversion of spontaneous joint fusion to total wrist arthroplasty.
