The Quality Improvement-Patient Safety Education Initiative (QI-PS), developed by Julie Samora, MD/PhD and Kevin Shea, MD, is a robust portal for orthopaedic surgeons to learn about, and keep abreast of, quality improvement and patient safety concepts, models, programs, and initiatives.

Multiple orthopaedic experts in QI and patient safety have contributed to this initiative, sharing their knowledge, wisdom, and insights in many high yield areas. This ‘living’ collection of didactics will continue to grow as the field matures.

Current topics include: a background in quality improvement and patient safety; using clinical practice guidelines to guide care; developing care pathways; quality improvement considerations in the disaster setting; use of registries and cohorts to improve care; drivers of burnout; opioid stewardship, and reduction of wrong site surgery, to name a few.

This portal is appropriate for residents in training, fellows, program directors, and attendings in various practice settings. Learners will gain a more comprehensive understanding of quality improvement and patient safety specific to musculoskeletal health.
