Opening Ceremony kicks off Annual Meeting

Join your colleagues at today’s Opening Ceremony for the official start of the 2010 Annual Meeting. The festivities all happen in the La Nouvelle Ballroom, beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Presidential Address
In his presidential address, “From Health Care to Haiti: Orthopaedic Surgeons at their Best,” Joseph D. Zuckerman, MD, gives special recognition to the outstanding efforts of AAOS members and staff in response to the devastating Haiti earthquake.

2010 Guest Nation
The AAOS is pleased to welcome Mexico as this year’s guest nation. The AAOS has enjoyed a longstanding educational partnership with the two main orthopaedic associations in Mexico: the Asociación Mexicana de Ortopedia y Traumatología (AMOT) and the Colegio Mexicana de Ortopedia (CMOT, formally known as SMO).

Invited Speaker
AAOS fellow Robert L. Satcher Jr., MD, PhD, will share his experiences as a member of the six-person crew that recently returned from an 11-day NASA mission to the International Space Station.

PSA Campaign
The unveiling of the new AAOS public service advertising (PSA) campaign is an Opening Ceremony favorite event. This year’s PSA multimedia campaign features television, radio, and print ads focused on fall prevention. The Academy also partnered with specialty societies and associations to create four print ads addressing back pain, osteoporosis, trauma, and foot and ankle injuries. The new “Heroes” ads illustrate the positive impact that skilled and compassionate orthopaedic treatment can have on patients’ lives.

Research Awards
Presentation of the three Kappa Delta Awards and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Clinician Scientist Award will recognize advances in orthopaedic research.

In addition, AAOS CEO Karen Hackett, FACHE, CAE, will deliver her report to the fellowship, the North American Spine Society and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association—both celebrating anniversaries—will be honored, and John D. Kelly IV, MD, will welcome the class of 2010.

The pomp and pageantry are part of the fun. Don’t miss these opening ceremony highlights!
