Meet the artists today

Artists participating in the Wounded in Action: An Art Exhibition of Orthopaedic Advancements will be on hand to discuss their artwork during a social program beginning at 4 p.m. this afternoon in room 208 of the Morial Convention Center. In addition, an evening reception honoring the artists will be held today outside the La Nouvelle Orleans Ballroom, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

“We Honor the Fallen” by Ret. Sgt. Peter Damon (oil on canvas)

The artist talk will feature retired Sgt. Peter J. Damon and Susan Etcoff Fraerman. Mr. Damon is an Iraq War veteran who lost both of his arms when the wheel assembly of a Blackhawk helicopter he was servicing exploded. The accident, which occurred at an air base outside Balad, Iraq, in October 2003, killed his partner. He will discuss his art before the accident, his rehabilitation, and how his art has changed.

Ms. Fraerman’s work focuses on contemporary issues that have touched her deeply. One issue that is close to her heart is the universal suffering of families who have or have had soldiers in combat. She will discuss war-related art, and her talk will feature other Wounded in Action artists.
