This year’s Annual Meeting opening ceremony will make you particularly proud to be associated with orthopaedics, as the AAOS honors those who care for wounded soldiers, recognizes the 2009 Guest Nation, and unveils the latest public service advertising (PSA) campaign.

It’s all scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. in the Venetian Ballroom of the Venetian Hotel, when AAOS President Tony Rankin, MD, takes the stage.

Distinguished Visiting Scholars honored

Andrew N. Pollak, MD, chair of the AAOS Extremity War Injuries and Disaster Preparedness Project Team, will speak about his team’s successful efforts to secure the single largest increase in federal funding for musculoskeletal/extremity trauma research.

He will also introduce the participants of the Distinguished Visiting Scholars program—a joint program of AAOS and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association for orthopaedic surgeons who have more than 10 years of trauma care experience and have volunteered at least 2 weeks at the Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany.

2009 Guest Nation

This year’s guest nation is Brazil. The Sociedade Brasileira de Ortopedia e Traumatologia is the largest orthopaedic association in Latin America, with more than 9,500 members.

2009 PSA campaign

An opening ceremony favorite will be the unveiling of the 2009 Academy’s public service advertising (PSA) campaign. From the print ad encouraging medical students to consider orthopaedics as a specialty to an animated television ad that will get your joints jumping, you’ll enjoy these efforts to enhance the image of orthopaedic surgeons.

Research awards

Advances in orthopaedic research will be honored with the presentation of three Kappa Delta Awards as well as the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation Clinician Scientist Award.

Finally, Dr. Rankin and Karen Hackett, CAE, FACHE, the chief executive officer of the AAOS, will present their summaries of the past year, and Chitranjan S. Ranawat, MD, will welcome the class of 2009.

Plan on attending. It will be an unforgettable experience!
