Patient education brochures: What's new?

The Academy’s new series of patient education brochures includes the following titles:

About Your Knee explains knee anatomy and function, and provides an overview of common knee problems.

Plantar Fasciitis describes the injury, its causes, and diagnosis. Nonsurgical treatments, including specific stretching exercises to relieve heel pain, are also provided.

Cast Care explains why casts and splints are used and identifies the warning signs of possible problems. Instruction for proper cast or splint care is provided, as well as rehabilitation information.

Hip Osteoarthritis* provides information on hip osteoarthritis, anatomy, causes, and diagnosis. The brochure describes nonsurgical and surgical treatment options, and offers tips for living with osteoarthritis.

Knee Exercises explains knee anatomy and function and features eight common therapeutic knee exercises. The brochure unfolds into a small poster with detailed exercise descriptions and how-to illustrations.

Knee Osteoarthritis* describes knee osteoarthritis, anatomy, causes, and diagnosis. It explains nonsurgical and surgical treatment options and provides tips for living with osteoarthritis.

Osteoporosis* clearly defines this debilitating disease, identifying its causes and diagnosis. The importance of calcium intake, the roles of vitamin D and exercise, and the various means of prevention and treatment are also highlighted.

Getting Ready for Joint Replacement* helps patients prepare for surgery with sections on being physically ready for surgery, what to expect during the hospital stay, how to prepare for returning home, ways to make the home safer, and items to help with daily activities.

After Joint Replacement helps patients through their recovery from joint replacement surgery. Sections include how to speed recovery, warning signs, ways to regain strength, resuming daily activities, returning to sports, and exercise.

Frozen Shoulder explains frozen shoulder, as well as its symptoms and causes. The brochure also describes nonsurgical and surgical treatment options and rehabilitation.

Rotator Cuff Tears* describes rotator cuff tears, anatomy, causes, and diagnosis. Nonsurgical and surgical treatment options are discussed, as well as rehabilitation.
