New research award benefits OREF, AOSSM

Freddie H. Fu, MD, of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and his wife Hilda Pang Fu have made a $1 million gift commitment to the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) through a life insurance policy to fund a new research award. The award will be made in cooperation with the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and will be known as the OREF/AOSSM/Dr. Freddie H. and Mrs. Hilda Pang Fu Research Award.

This award will support research directed by a female orthopaedic surgeon researcher on a topic related to sports medicine or by an orthopaedic surgeon researcher of either gender on a topic of special interest to female athletes.

“Gender equity is a very important thing to me personally,” Mrs. Fu said. “I support Freddie because I know that orthopaedic research is one of his most important passions. By making a family gift to OREF, we can funnel the money to support new initiatives that help level the playing field for women in the area of orthopaedics.”

Dr. Fu agrees. “It’s satisfying and gratifying to fund research through OREF. If funding OREF means that more opportunities are available for women, we would have better quality research because there would be more talented orthopaedic surgeons doing the work.”

The award will be added to a portfolio of named OREF research awards that the Foundation is developing with several orthopaedic partners. The selection of the award recipient will be made through the OREF peer review process with representatives of the AOSSM Research Committee.

In establishing this award, Dr. and Mrs. Fu have furthered their contributions to orthopaedic medicine and significantly advanced OREF’s strategic goal of building endowment support for major research awards across the broad spectrum of orthopaedic care.

Dr. Fu is chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and is president-elect of the AOSSM. He recently completed a 6-year term as a member of the OREF Board of Trustees, during which he served as a member of the Corporate Relations and Finance Committees. Mrs. Fu is a founding board member and immediate past board chair of the Women and Girls Foundation of SW Pennsylvania, whose mission is the achievement of gender equity in the region. Dr. and Mrs. Fu are longtime donors to OREF and members of the Alfred R. Shands Jr. Circle.

OREF thanks all individuals, groups, and industry partners who have made possible 53 years of orthopaedic advances through research and education.
