Research makes new technologies, innovative therapies, and alternative treatment options possible. The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Corporate Associates understand and appreciate the vital role that OREF plays in funding the most timely, relevant, and promising musculoskeletal research, which broadens the base of orthopaedic knowledge and ultimately leads to enhanced patient care. Through the OREF Corporate Associates Program, industry is able to support quality initiatives and research studies while demonstrating their corporate leadership and commitment to improved musculoskeletal care.

Through the 2007 Corporate Associates Program, OREF raised nearly $5.8 million in support of OREF, AAOS, and specialty orthopaedic organization research initiatives. Of this support, $3.1 million was specifically earmarked for OREF research and education projects.

As the relationship between industry and orthopaedics evolves, OREF continues to develop innovative programs for its corporate partners that strengthen relationships throughout orthopaedics, fuel scientific advancement and clinical knowledge, and improve patient outcomes and quality of life. Following are some recent examples:

Pain Management Initiative: With support from Pfizer, the Pain Management Initiative surveyed orthopaedists to find out which pain management therapies, technologies, and techniques they prefer to administer to patients after surgery.

Thomson Physicians’ Desk ReferenceĀ® (PDR): Through a unique partnership between OREF and Thomson PDR, Ferring Pharmaceuticals provided sponsorship support to co-brand the first PDR Orthopaedic Prescribing Guide. The Guide was developed by Thomson PDR, with guidance from OREF’s Corporate Relations Committee, and sent to each AAOS fellow last year.

Health Care Compliance article: DePuy Orthopaedics provided an educational grant to OREF to develop an article titled, “Essential Guidelines, Regulations and Ethical Considerations: The Evolving Relationship between Orthopaedists and Industry.” OREF provided oversight and peer review for the article, which appeared as a supplement in the Journal of the AAOS and is available at

A strong and productive alliance with industry enables OREF to fund quality programs that lead to clinical improvements and contribute to better patient outcomes. OREF is proud to acknowledge our 2007Corporate Associates for their generous support, and we extend a special welcome to our newest partners.
