Resolutions, Bylaws Committees Hold Open Hearings on Wednesday

The AAOS Resolutions and Bylaws Committees will conduct Open Hearings regarding the proposed resolutions and bylaw amendments for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (Academy) and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (Association) on Wednesday starting at 1 p.m. in Room 347 of the Morial Convention Center. The Bylaws Committee Open Hearing will start shortly after the conclusion of the Resolutions Committee Open Hearing at around 1:30 pm.

All fellows are encouraged to participate and will have the opportunity to vote on the committees’ recommendations shortly after the AAOS 2018 Annual Meeting.

Copies of all proposed resolutions and bylaw amendments, with the recommendations of the Board of Councilors (BOC), the Board of Specialty Societies (BOS), and the AAOS Board of Directors were included in the official meeting notice sent electronically to each fellow in February.


The following AAOS resolutions are being considered as part of the five-year review process.

  • Academy Resolution No. 1: The Provision of Orthopaedic Care in Rural America
  • Academy Resolution No. 2: Resident Duty Hours
  • Academy Resolution No. 3: Enhanced Role of Practicing, Nonsurgical Orthopaedic Physician
  • Academy Resolution No. 4: Health and Fitness Assessment and Maintenance
  • Association Resolution No. 5 (newly proposed): AAOS Support of CMS Removing Total Joint Replacement from Inpatient Only List
  • Association Resolution No. 6: Support for Medical Savings Accounts and Health Savings Accounts
  • Association Resolution No. 7: Physician Group Negotiations with Third-Party Insurers
  • Association Resolution No. 8: Surgical and Other Medical Society Cooperation Regarding Health Care Reform
  • Association Resolution No. 9: Disability Insurance Policies
  • Association Resolution No. 10: Orthopaedic Surgeons as Highly Qualified and Cost-Effective Professionals

Bylaw amendments

Three sets of proposed bylaw amendments are being considered, which include:

  • Group No. 1 (Association): Modifications to the Professional Compliance Program
  • Group No. 2 (Association): Clarify Membership Categories
  • Group No. 3 (Association and Academy): Clarify Resolutions Submission Process
