Candidate Membership

We are pleased to have you join the AAOS.  As a Candidate Member, you can:

  • Expand your knowledge and skills with renowned educational resources, including Orthopaedic Knowledge Update (OKU), self-assessment examinations, clinical guidelines, and digital offerings.
  • Learn from the best minds and practitioners in orthopaedic medicine through our globally-valued publications and videos, including Journal of the AAOS (JAAOS), Orthopaedic Knowledge Online Journal (OKOJ), Orthopaedic Video Theater (OVT), and webinars.
  • Experience fellowship and support by connecting with other AAOS members in the U.S. and around the world, especially by attending the AAOS Annual Meeting.

Candidate Membership
The AAOS provides Candidate Membership to all graduates of U.S./Canadian allopathic or osteopathic orthopaedic residency programs and internationally-trained orthopaedic surgeons licensed and practicing in the U.S. or Canada. This category of membership is available to orthopaedic surgeons for up to five years immediately following training.

Candidate Membership (ABOS eligible) Or Associate Osteopathic Candidate Membership (AOBOS eligible)

Requirements:
Available to graduates immediately upon completion of approved U.S./Canadian Orthopaedic residency programs who intend to pursue certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) or American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (AOBOS).  Compliance with the AAOS Standards of Professionalism.

Application process: Opt-in application during the last year of training with the AAOS Resident/Fellow Transition Form. If you’ve missed the Resident/Fellow Transition period, contact AAOS Member Services.

Recruitment time: Between April and September for expiring AAOS Resident Members. Year round for non-members who are eligible.

Dues & membership cycle: $459 annually, beginning January 1st – December 31st with a 5-year maximum following training. Apply for full membership (Active Fellow or Associate Osteopathic Member) before Candidate Membership expires.

Associate Orthopaedic Candidate Membership (Internationally-trained)

Available to graduates of international residency programs (outside of U.S. & Canada) who have a full and unlimited license to practice in the U.S. This category of membership is limited to five years after completion of training, including postgraduate fellowship(s).

Requirements: Received training (residency) in a country outside of U.S. & Canada and maintain a full unlimited license to practice in the U.S. Compliance with the AAOS Standards of Professionalism.

Application process: Application and CV required. Applications are processed within 24 business hours after being received.
