  • Overview of Topics: The 12th annual EWI symposium, Homeland Defense as a Translation of War Lessons Learned, will focus on disaster preparedness, as well as an ongoing research agenda to highlight the state of the art and identify knowledge gaps in the treatment of extremity trauma. Homeland defense has increasingly been at the forefront of national concern, with incidents of domestic and international terrorist activity monopolizing headlines. Disaster Preparedness has been discussed at EWI in prior years, and must be revisited with the intention of improving readiness, developing a collaborative disaster response system, and providing pre-disaster education of both providers and civilians. The program will include presentations and collaborative discussions on domestic readiness, disaster education, communication between providers, and developing response teams. This meeting will involve various stakeholders, including the ACA, AMA, OTA, SOMOS, and the Military Health System Strategic Partnership (MHSSP).  New research will be featured throughout the agenda; podium presentations will be selected from the poster abstracts.

Proceedings from the EWI XII symposium will be published with the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS).
